Laboratory Services
Pathology Services
When a doctor needs a fluid or tissue sample, they will need a clinical laboratory in order to analyze it. The results from lab tests give doctors important information about the patient’s overall health. In some cases, the doctor may have you personally visit the lab so the sample can be taken there and immediately stored for safe keeping. Results from the test are forwarded to your doctor, who will help you understand the results.
The Henderson Laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) while our Laboratory in Morganfield is accredited by the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA).
Lab services at Methodist Health include:
- Chemistry – Clinical chemistry tests measure the chemicals in body fluids like blood and urine. This gives doctors information on glucose, hormone, lipids and other metabolic substances. It can help diagnose several conditions like heart disease and diabetes.
- Coagulation – These tests measure the body’s capacity to form blood clots. The results can help find the cause of unexplained bleeding and assess the patient’s risk of forming dangerous blood clots.
- Hematology – This is a category of tests used to analyze blood and diagnose blood disorders. Common tests include complete blood counts and bone marrow exams.
- Immunoassay – In basic terms, these tests measure various means the body has to fight infections and viruses. The immune system functions thanks to numerous processes in the body going on at any given time. Immunoassay tests are used to make sure each component that the body uses to detect antibodies is working properly. They can also be used to check on other internal chemical processes.
- Microbiology – Medical microbiology tests inspect sample specimens for bacterial infections. These tests are also helpful in helping doctors find the best ways of fighting infections by testing treatments on the sample.
- Pathology – Pathological lab tests test body fluids for diseases. This umbrella term for lab testing can include hematology, microbiology, chemistry and immunoassay tests.
- Transfusion – We perform a variety of transfusion services at Methodist Hospital. One of the most common uses of transfusion lab services is testing donated blood to make sure it is safe for the recipient and free of HIV, West Nile virus and other diseases.
We also offer Urinalysis, bacteriology, a blood bank, cytology, diagnostic immunology and more. If patients require a test that we do not perform, we will forward the sample to a reference lab.
